Have you ever met Blythe?
I have a thing for Blythe! For those who haven't been introduced she began as a doll manufactured by toy company Kenner in 1972 but she was made for only one year before she was popped into retirement due to poor sales, which seems like such a strange thing when you consider her comeback success!
Not meant for world of dolls and a girl before her time this one! Blythe was destined to be a muse, an icon, a model!
The story goes that 25 years later in 1997 Gina Garan a cool chick with a camera was given a Blythe doll and she began photographing Blythe all over the world!
A book of her photography was released in 2000 called 'This is Blythe'.
The following year a new edition of Blythe dolls called Neo Blythes were remade and sold out in an hour and now she is a collectors item and loved the world around!
Sooo today's treat was to draw a character/object/scene, and shade using ONLY solid blacks and whites. Bonus points for good use of light and shadow.
I have chosen to draw Blythe
There are a whole pile of artists that customise their Blythe dolls and with my penchant for mixed media sculpture and love of toys this really tickled my fancy so i bought my very own Blythe but have since not done anything with her - this is her first photo shoot in fact and the poor girl is desperate for a new outfit!
I want to turn my first Blythe into a faerie of course but i am still unsure of all the resins and new materials to use - its a bit overwhelming really!
I LOVE looking at all the artists images of their customised Blythes - Gosh they are sooo inspiring. Sometimes i wish i didn't need to sleep so i could do ALL THE THINGS!!
Do you also have a Blythe love? I would love to see some pics!
